You don’t land in county jail with a death sentence. The maximum stretch is 2 ½ years. But for inmates locked up in county-run jails in Massachusetts, death is increasingly one possible outcome.
The suicide in April of Patriot’s star Aaron Hernandez turned attention onto state prisons, but an even bigger suicide problem is happening in the county jails. Suicides are rising. Since 2006, at least 65 men and women inmates have killed themselves in jails run by county sheriffs.
Jail officials say they can’t predict and stop every suicide. But legal watchdogs and experts challenge that thinking.
